It’s the Little Things: Celebrating the Small Stuff

It’s the Little Things: Celebrating the Small Stuff

It’s the middle of September. Summer’s ended and the little vacations are scheduled farther apart now. School has been back in for a few weeks, and the routines are becoming more regular. Spontaneity has slowed down and work can become a serious drain if you let it!

I don’t have a ton of tips for you today. I just have one simple request. Can you begin celebrating the small stuff? I promise it will make life so much more enjoyable! Isn’t that why summer is so captivating and fun? Think of all of the small celebrations we host. Pool parties, amusement park extravaganzas, road trips, and barbecues hold our attention until Labor Day and then BAM, we hit a wall and wonder where it all went! Did you have that conversation? Did you ignore that comment, instead of snapping back, like usual? Did you go to the gym-at all-this week? Did you turn down that muffin? Did you turn in all your homework or wash your laundry before Saturday? LET’S CELEBRATE!

Celebrations don’t have to be large and time consuming. You can buy your favorite ice cream, watch your favorite show, call a friend, write a thank you note, or plan to cook something special this weekend. Watch how great it works! Your spouse and your children will appreciate it when acknowledge a small thing in a special way. Your coworkers may be alarmed that you noticed and cared enough to write a thank you note. Your mentees will light up, and I guarantee you it will make a difference in their day! I believe in extrinsic rewards (rewards you taste, touch, or take in through your senses), especially when we need a little pick me up, a slight adjustment of the routine, or a small dose of motivation to keep going.  Do you have any suggestions?
